The inspiration behind “Champ” centers on 16-year-old Ukrainian karate champion Mariia Hnes. During a competition in Vienna, she chose to walk away from a joint podium photo with a Russian competitor, a moment that quickly went viral and became symbolic for many Ukrainians. One of the most stirring moments in the song comes when Kimberlin delivers the rallying line, “You have got to stand up once again, you’re a champion, if it never keep you down.” The lyric captures the heart of “Champ,” turning resilience into a personal call to action and reminding listeners that true champions rise, no matter how many times they are tested. Kimberlin traveled to Kyiv in September 2025 to film the music video with Mariia, working under the reality of missile and drone attacks.
