2mindsas1’s new single, “Slow Motion Car Crash,” feels like the kind of song you stumble across by accident and then replay because something about it hits a nerve. The duo, Rory Flynn and Yannis Masouras — may be a studio project, but nothing about their sound feels distant or detached. Flynn brings more than 30 years of songwriting experience, and it shows in the ease of his delivery. Masouras, best known for his work with the Athens indie band Matisse, surrounds that voice with a dark-glow indie rock palette that calls back to the brooding charm of Suede and Editors without directly mimicking either.
Lyrically, the track focuses on one of those dates that spirals out of control for no dramatic reason, just small missteps stacking up until the whole night feels like a slow, awkward skid. Flynn’s writing is understated rather than theatrical, and that’s part of what makes it work. He captures the uncomfortable humour of trying to salvage an evening that clearly isn’t going the way either person hoped. It’s a relatable scenario delivered with a bit of self-deprecating warmth rather than bitterness.

Musically, the song moves with a steady, slightly tense pulse. Masouras builds the production carefully: crisp drums, a bassline that never tries to dominate, and guitars that shimmer at the edges like headlights cutting through fog. Nothing feels rushed. The whole track breathes, which suits the theme of watching a situation fall apart in real time. It’s polished, but not too perfect, you can still feel the human touch in the spaces between the sounds.
As an introduction to what the pair have planned for their run of singles in the second half of 2025, “Slow Motion Car Crash” is a strong, confident start. It shows two musicians with different histories but a shared affection for moody, melodic indie rock. If this track is any indication, their upcoming releases are worth keeping an eye on.
