Ryan Yingst’s “Ordinary Means” finds extraordinary meaning in the places most people overlook. The indie-folk single turns the everyday struggles of independent artists into an intimate reflection on recognition, perseverance, and the value of genuine human expression. Rather than chasing grandeur, Yingst embraces simplicity, allowing the song’s message to emerge with clarity and emotional weight. Its stripped-back character creates a sense of closeness, as though the listener has stepped into a quiet conversation about the sacrifices artists make simply to continue creating.

Inspired by late-night conversations and real frustrations shared among Yingst’s fellow musicians, the song captures the tension between artistic devotion and the realities of making a living. Four-hour cover sets, busking in subway stations, restaurant performances, and requests to play familiar classics become symbols of an industry where original work can easily be overlooked. Yet “Ordinary Means” never feels bitter. Its perspective is more reflective than confrontational, encouraging listeners to reconsider how they measure artistic value and to notice the beauty that exists beyond popularity, funding, and numbers.

The recording process reinforces that philosophy. Yingst wrote, arranged, recorded, and mixed the piece himself, capturing guitar and vocals together in a single take at his Philadelphia home studio. Eoin Kelly’s harmonica adds an improvised dimension, while Yingst’s layered harmonies give the chorus a warm, communal quality. Michael Cumming of Treacle Mine Recording later mastered the project to tape, enhancing its organic character. Influences ranging from Townes Van Zandt and Bob Dylan to Gregory Alan Isakov can be felt within its understated folk sensibility, while the recording remains distinctly Yingst’s own.

“Ordinary Means” becomes particularly striking because it asks listeners to pause and reconsider what they normally pass by. The song recalls the famous Joshua Bell subway experiment, where exceptional artistry went largely unnoticed simply because it appeared in an unexpected setting. Yingst approaches the same idea through song, celebrating the human effort hidden inside ordinary moments. With its honest storytelling, unvarnished presentation, and thoughtful perspective, “Ordinary Means” is a quietly powerful reminder that meaningful art does not need a spotlight to deserve attention.
