Oaken Wires’ “Parakeets” captures the uneasy feeling of navigating a changing world while carrying the weight of memories that refuse to disappear. The track blends folk-rock warmth with electronic sophistication, creating a sound that feels simultaneously familiar and forward-looking. Its references to Gorillaz, Hot Chip, and Alt-J provide useful context, yet Oaken Wires develops a character of its own, balancing rhythmic energy with reflective songwriting. The result is an engaging alternative track that can feel bright on the surface while carrying more complicated emotions underneath.

The song’s narrative centres on adaptation, missed opportunities, and the words that remain unspoken after a relationship reaches its conclusion. Its verses revisit the past through rose-tinted memories before gradually moving toward acceptance, giving the story a relatable emotional progression. The chorus shifts the perspective outward, acknowledging a world that feels increasingly dangerous while holding onto the simple determination to keep surviving and moving forward. That contrast between personal loss and wider uncertainty gives “Parakeets” much of its emotional resonance.

Oaken Wires emerged from an unlikely but fitting creative partnership between two Tottenham-based fathers who met while taking their children to the park. Oaken Lee (Jake) brings a raw folk-rock sensibility, while CutWires (Tim) contributes electronic precision, creating the project’s distinctive man-versus-machine dynamic. Their influences stretch from Massive Attack and Gorillaz to Hot Chip and Alt-J, with touches of Augustus Pablo and Paul Simon adding further colour to their musical palette. The partnership feels natural rather than calculated, allowing contrasting backgrounds to coexist within a single creative identity.

The title “Parakeets” draws inspiration from the green parakeets that have become a familiar sight across London’s parks, thriving far from their ancestral homes in Africa and Asia. That image quietly mirrors the song’s themes of adaptation and survival, giving the title greater meaning beyond its surface charm. Following “Footprints,” released in January 2026, the track marks another step in Oaken Wires’ developing catalogue. With its combination of reflective storytelling, electronic detail, and uplifting energy, “Parakeets” offers an accessible yet thoughtful listen that leaves a lasting impression.
