TaniA Kyllikki’s “HUMAN” is based on a very real situation; the idea first arose from a Facebook post she made after having seen a great deal of hostility directed at people on the grounds of their race, culture or background. These thoughts remained with her and eventually turned into lyrics. The result is an unexpected combination of soulful songwriting and techno-house production, endowing the song with a strong sense of movement while at the same time keeping its message clearly in sight.
Rynellton creates the track using a constant electronic pulse, together with atmospheric sounds and hypnotic rhythms which give the piece a strong sense of movement. Kyllikki then takes that base in a totally different direction by incorporating gospel and soul elements; her voice shifts from more intimate and personal sections to strong, powerful belts and detailed vocal runs, so that the variations in volume appear natural. The two aspects of the production complement each other well, particularly since neither one dominates the other.

The main question in “HUMAN” is a simple one: what does it really mean to be human? Although Kyllikki refers to race, judgement, equality, compassion and the labels that people put on each other, she never turns the song into a lecture. Rather, she encourages listeners to consider the way we treat one another and to think about whether it is possible to live together with greater understanding. The constant appeal for harmony gives the chorus a lasting impression, and the topic of the song provides something to reflect on after the music has ended.
There’s also a certain appropriateness in the way the track came about. Kyllikki and Rynellton were in their bedroom when the idea for another song suddenly struck them, even though they thought the album was already complete. This spontaneous start seems to match “HUMAN”, an record which appears to be motivated by a real desire to express something. The blend of heartfelt vocals, electronic energy and a theme concerned with shared humanity is what gives the single its individuality. It’s a song meant to be danced to, but at the same time one that urges you to pause and reflect.
