The EP entitled Hopeless Romantic by Ninemansion transforms heartbreak into a deeply personal assortment of memories, contradictions and unresolved emotions. Even though contact has broken down, love is still there throughout the record, producing an emotional distance that doesn’t fully develop into emotional detachment. The songs look at unanswered calls, guilt, a strong desire to be in touch and the difficulty of coming to terms with the idea that someone whom you still care about may no longer be reachable. Instead of treating heartbreak as something that is neatly resolved, the project remains within the uncertainty that persists when emotions refuse to go away.
The opening line immediately creates that sense of tension with “It’s on silent when you call me / You hurt me but I’m sorry”. There is a clear contradiction here: hurt, avoidance and a sense of responsibility all occur at the same time, even though the wish for connection lies beneath them. In Hopeless Romantic, similar emotions are conveyed through the use of dreams, memories, silence and communication. Emotions are treated as things that can be saved, lost or carried on, which gives the EP its particular emotional tone without forgetting the genuine, human experiences that lie behind it.
The emo-plugg production of futuristic music provides room for delicate melodies and intimate aspects of the vocals, enabling the emotional content to stay at the heart of the work. The songs do not make use of dramatic explanations in order to convey their meaning; rather, it is through small details and the presence of conflicting emotions that the seriousness of what has been lost becomes apparent. There is a constant feeling of a person attempting to go on with everyday life while still holding on to memories that have not come to a conclusion. This tension is what gives the project its emotional impact, especially since love and pain keep appearing together.
Hopeless Romantic comes across as an emotional record of the things that remain once a relationship has changed. The songs show how it’s possible to still feel attached, to have unanswerable communication and to carry around unresolved guilt even when someone has become unreachable. Instead of seeing heartbreak as the end of a chapter, ninemansion treats it as something that goes on through memories, habits, and feelings. The end result is a personal EP consisting of emotions that have no place left to go and thus turns private heartbreak into something that people listening to it can identify with in their own lives.
