At 58, independent artist 50mething proves that creative timing is everything. With the release of his latest original single, Loose Change (Gone Electric), he steps confidently into the contemporary music conversation, armed with wit, experience and sharp social observation. Released on 9th February 2026, the track captures a peculiarly modern anxiety: the surge in phone thefts carried out by riders on ebikes and escooters. Rather than delivering a heavy-handed protest song, 50mething opts for a tongue-in-cheek approach, crafting an alternative track that is as knowing as it is rhythmically engaging. The result is a must-listen slice of social commentary wrapped in electric urgency.

The song’s origins stretch back four years, conceived amid growing concerns about street crime. At the heart of the track lies its disarmingly practical refrain  “Don’t leave the house with more than you need” a line delivered with a knowing wink that doubles as both streetwise advice and subtle social critique. Its central message is deceptively simple: leave the valuables at home, carry only loose change, and stay alert. Yet what elevates the track is its evolution. As ebikes and escooters transformed pavements into precarious spaces, doubling as swift getaway vehicles — the chorus found its spark. “Gone Electric” feels both literal and metaphorical, capturing the charged atmosphere of modern urban life while injecting a sly humour that prevents the subject matter from becoming overbearing.

50mething’s journey to this point adds further depth. An ex-dancer and former garden builder, he first experimented with recording in his twenties using a tape-to-tape eight-track recorder before life intervened. Rediscovering music in 2019 through compact digital technology reignited a long-held passion. His catalogue, now standing at around 70 unreleased tracks, draws consistently from personal and political realities. Influenced by the boundary-pushing artistry of Prince and the soulful social consciousness of Stevie Wonder, his sound carries both groove and gravitas.

Importantly, Loose Change (Gone Electric) arrives following a deeply personal chapter. His debut release responded to a 2023 cancer diagnosis, marking resilience as a defining theme of his work. Choosing the moniker 50mething,  a nod to being “50-something” reflects both reinvention and refusal to be boxed in. With distribution handled by Ditto Music and a steady rollout planned, this single signals momentum. If this is what 58 sounds like, the music business would do well to pay attention.
