Emerging from Uniontown, Pennsylvania nestled between Pittsburgh and Morgantown—Mr.Wizard returns with Apartments, the band’s fifth release and a compelling turn inward as a solo-driven effort. Known for toggling between full-band energy and more intimate recordings, this latest EP leans into raw immediacy without sacrificing the grit that has defined their sound. Having previously drawn praise from Obscure Sound for crafting “a sound steeped in exciting rock nostalgia,” Mr.Wizard once again channels the punch and pulse of ’90s alt-rock while carving out something distinctly personal.

Opening track “All the Shapes,” sets the tone with fuzzy guitar textures and a restless undercurrent, balancing melody with distortion in a way that feels both urgent and reflective. Mr.Wizard distills the EP’s emotional core into the striking line, “it’s in the shapes that you take and the ones you can’t make,” a lyric that captures the quiet tension between identity and limitation, and underscores the song’s meditation on growth, self-perception, and the spaces where intention meets reality. In “The Snake,” Mr.Wizard captivates with lyrics like “how the serpent turned its head from one to two, then called out of the blue,” weaving a sense of mystery and sudden revelation into the song’s taut, edgy instrumentation. The stripped-back nature of the release works in its favor, amplifying the emotional weight behind each progression.

In “Fools Gold,” Mr.Wizard dives into a restless, introspective headspace with lines like “I can’t stay asleep, stuck trying to spar with these effigies. The violent mistakes made. Truth. Recluse,” capturing a sense of internal conflict and the struggle to confront one’s own past. There’s a sense of disillusionment in its tone, yet it never feels defeated but rather, it pulses with resilience. In “By the Tail,” Mr.Wizard captures a sense of unstoppable emotion, with lines like “I don’t think I can stop this feeling no matter what you say” echoing the tension and vulnerability that runs throughout the track.

Closing with “Doctor, Doctor,” the EP lands on a cathartic note, with lines like “Another simple matter, we’re ferried off to lands far away. And I can’t take this, Doctor, I’m a goner” capturing the raw vulnerability and emotional intensity that define Mr.Wizard’s solo work.  The song blends grit and vulnerability, bringing Apartments full circle. This release highlights Mr.Wizard’s songwriting depth and sonic identity proof that whether as a full band or a singular voice, their alt-rock spirit remains electrifying and authentic.
