Tabitha Zu’s long-awaited digital release of “Heard It Before” arrives as both a rediscovery and a reaffirmation of the band’s lasting significance within the early ’90s UK alternative movement. Originally issued in 1991 as a limited split 7-inch alongside Homage Freaks, the single captures the group at their most immediate and instinctive — raw in execution yet remarkably focused in atmosphere. Released through Eira Records, the track finally receives the wider accessibility it has deserved for decades.

From its opening moments, “Heard It Before” establishes a distinctive balance between intensity and vulnerability. Melanie Garside’s commanding vocal performance carries both urgency and restraint, while her guitar work cuts through the mix with sharp precision. Backed by Phil Stevenson’s brooding basslines and John Hamilton’s forceful percussion, the song moves with an untamed energy that never feels forced or excessive. Derek Birkett’s production preserves the band’s natural edge, allowing the track’s gritty textures and ethereal undertones to coexist without compromise.

The single’s reputation within the UK underground scene was well earned. Supported at the time by publications including NME, Sounds and Melody Maker, “Heard It Before” reached No. 15 on the UK Indie Chart and helped establish Tabitha Zu as one of the era’s most compelling alternative acts. Their ability to merge punk urgency with atmospheric songwriting distinguished them from many contemporaries, while their relentless live schedule further strengthened their reputation as a formidable presence on stage.

Accompanied by a newly assembled video featuring previously unseen live footage and archival photography, this release feels especially timely. Rather than relying on nostalgia, “Heard It Before” demonstrates the enduring value of authenticity and artistic conviction. More than three decades after its original release, the single remains emotionally resonant, sonically powerful and artistically uncompromising, a vital reminder of a band whose contribution to the alternative underground deserves renewed recognition.
