Sienná’s EMA is a compilation consisting of nine tracks which is based on the concept of converting images, natural environments and perceived messages into sound. Instead of adhering to a traditional genre format, the album passes from cinematic music, ambient styles, drum & bass, glitch and influences from Japanese traditional music, thus producing a listening experience that relies on contrast and movement. The outcome is an intentionally non-conventional set of recordings that regards electronic music as a means of exploration, enabling each piece to build its own atmosphere without being bound by a fixed structural pattern.
The link between the album and nature is especially significant in determining its character. While in the Kibune valley near Kyoto and on the island of Ischia, Sienná composed the pieces by turning her impressions of these places into music rather than drawing them as visual sketches. This idea is what imparts a reflective quality to EMA, the music being presented as a kind of communication shaped by observation and alone time. Moreover, the focus on synthesising image into sound also provides the record with a unique structure, linking its electronic elements to the natural environments that inspired them.
On the nine tracks, the approach which goes beyond the boundaries of any one genre prevents the album from developing a single definite sound. It combines cinematic sections with ambient textures, ideas based on glitches, drum & bass elements and references to Japanese traditional music. This variety gives rise to a feeling of constant discovery, and since the album takes a non-linear route its compositions are able to follow the course of their own ideas rather than adhering to conventional pop structures. Moreover, there is a conscious tension between the use of digital synthesis and the album’s recognition of imperfection, highlighting the project’s concern with exploring expressive possibilities in electronic music.
The first single, “Be A Seeker, Believer”, brings out themes of resilience and self-belief and is presented as an expression of hope in a world which is both beautiful and sad. In the context of the album as a whole, it shows EMA’s concern with interconnectedness and the relationship between human perception and the natural world. The nine tracks on EMA show experimental electronic music to be an open-ended creative language—one that is able to move from one genre, one environment and one idea to another while at the same time keeping a strong sense of artistic freedom.
