It is possible for everyday worries to take up far more attention than they deserve, and Curtis Millen looks at this common situation in “SMALL STUFF”. The song is based on the concept of putting aside minor concerns and serves as a reminder to realise when insignificant events start to affect the rest of the day. Its attractiveness comes from the simplicity of the message, since it promotes a change in perspective without turning an ordinary human experience into one that is unnecessarily complicated.

Personal expression is important in the song because of the spontaneous vocal version which reflects the emotions at the heart of its main theme. Instead of treating the subject as an abstract concept, the song links its message to an experience which listeners can easily understand. As a result, ‘SMALL STUFF’ has an accessible starting point, so that its meaning stays clear even though its lively pace stops the subject from becoming too serious.

Retro soul and funk form the basis of the record, situating its musical style within a tradition known for enthusiastic performances and a strong rhythmic drive. At the same time, the song marks a step into unexplored areas, combining its original roots with its later developments. The way it has been creatively directed supports the main idea without letting the message come ahead of the music, thus achieving a balance between important thematic content and an energetic performance.

What makes “SMALL STUFF” so appealing is the way it connects an ordinary experience with an encouraging message. The song points out how easily small problems can continue to persist, yet it also implies that people can choose how much attention to pay to them. Curtis Millen achieves a release of this kind by associating this common topic with the style of retro funk and soul, thus prompting listeners to look again at their daily worries and leave space for more enjoyable moments.
