With “Maybe Love’s A Crime”, DownTown Mystic is adding a new entry to its collection of rock and roll songs, the single taking a surprise turn following the Mystic Highway Road Trip EP. It comes with a clear link to the traditions of American rock but its divergence from what was expected gives it its own distinct character. For a project that is already well established, this readiness to introduce variation can play an important role in keeping creative momentum going.

Maybe Love’s a Crime is part of a musical tradition which has always managed to combine familiarity with reinvention; American rock and roll forms the broader background for this genre, showing that its influence still extends to current audiences. The vintage-and-modern approach of DownTown Mystic strengthens this link by positioning the album between a respect for the past and a desire to keep its musical viewpoint up to date.

There is also a notable contrast between the project’s existing identity and the unexpected direction taken with this single. People who are familiar with the earlier EP have good reason to expect something new from this latest release, whereas those who are new to the music may hear it for the first time as an independent overview of DownTown Mystic’s work. This difference means that “Maybe Love’s A Crime” has a role that goes beyond just acting as a follow-up to a previous project.

DownTown Mystic maintains its exploration of the potential of traditional rock and roll with the song “Maybe Love’s A Crime”, without treating its musical identity as something definite. Although it maintains a link with its established influences this gives the work a sense of continuity, the change in direction at the same time creating a feeling of discovery. For listeners who are interested in current recordings influenced by classic American rock, the single gives them a good reason to take notice of a project that is still investigating its creative possibilities.
