From the beginning, Josh Orange’s album The Fire & The Call conveys a clear sense of storytelling, guiding the listener through various situations that are influenced by personal difficulties, relationships, difficult decisions and changes in circumstances. The writing is thorough and to the point, frequently setting its narratives in settings that are easily identifiable, while at the same time letting the characters and their experiences take the lead in the songs. A reflective tone runs through the entire album, with the stories shifting between private moments and more general observations.

The story entitled “No One Left to Blame” is notable for the way it depicts destructive behaviour and the difficulty involved in coming to terms with how deeply it has affected the narrator; the incident at the station turns into a confrontation with personal injury, and the constant use of the phrase “no one left to blame” shows how the narrator’s awareness of his own situation is increasing. “Beautiful Heart” follows a different course, looking at the aftermath of a failed relationship and the unanswered questions concerning its breakdown. References to an angel, darkness, destiny, glitter and gold form a reflective account of separation and uncertainty.

“THE DAMAGE” adopts a more confrontational stance, focusing on misunderstanding, broken promises, greed, and the results of selfish decisions. The narrator’s appeal for courage in overcoming what has occurred gives the song a resolute character, and the continual emphasis on “the damage done” ensures that the lasting consequences remain at the forefront. “ALL NIGHT LONG”, on the other hand, moves to a more adventurous scenario, depicting two people travelling together and having conversations and sharing memories along the highway. New York, Los Angeles, a car park beside a record store and music playing in the car all become part of a story full of movement and spontaneous moments between the two people.

The album is most interesting when its storytelling is specific and visual; “No One Left to Blame” deals with personal consequences, “Beautiful Heart” looks at the uncertainty involved in separation, “The Damage” investigates the effects of harmful decisions, and “All Night Long” conveys the atmosphere of a special journey spent together by two people. It is precisely because of these songs that the album has its own particular character, each track establishing its own setting yet at the same time staying in line with the album’s focus on human experiences and personal reflection.
