Magdi Aboul-Kheir’s Replicant Dreams enters a retro-futuristic world inspired by the science fiction of the 1980s. Throughout its nine tracks the album presents a vibrant universe in which spaceships, Light Cycles, cyborgs and androids play a part in a broad musical story. The synthesis of synthwave sounds with orchestral elements results in a range of moods that may appear cinematic, atmospheric, epic or romantic according to the course of each piece. Instead of sticking to a single mood, the album constantly changes its perspective yet continues to show a clear love for melody.
A major strength of the album is the way it conveys a sense of movement; some sections pulse and give the record a forward drive, whereas others, which are more atmospheric, allow space for reflection and emotional contrast. Although the album is based on retro-synth music and thus has a clearly nostalgic atmosphere, the addition of orchestral elements stops it from sounding as though it is stuck in one era. Moreover, there is a playful spirit in the project, as shown by its science-fiction imagery and lively rhythms, even though this sense of fun is in harmony with the more spacious and emotional moments.
Replicant Dreams can be seen as a spiritual continuation of Yesterday’s Future and takes the idea even further by moving into cinematic areas. Since each of the nine tracks is presented as a separate world, the album features a diverse range of moods rather than having all the pieces sound the same. The way the pulsating and atmospheric sections shift into the epic and romantic ones gives the act of listening a sense of scope. The end result is an album that adopts retro-futurism without using nostalgia as its sole aim.
