Pet Shop Boys – Disco 5

GENRE; Pop/ Rock

With Disco 5, Pet Shop Boys return to the remix‑compilation tradition that has spanned nearly four decades but this time it’s very much their own take on other artists’ work. Released 21 November 2025 via Parlophone, the 12-track collection features the duo’s remixes of songs by a diverse set of contemporaries: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Primal Scream, Paul Weller, Tina Turner, Claptone, and more, along with a PSB‑remixed version of their own “Dreamland” featuring Olly Alexander.

At its strongest, Disco 5 offers a showcase of Pet Shop Boys’ flair for dancefloor reinvention. The “Magic Eye” 12-inch remix of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ Think of a Number kicks things off with shimmering synths that evoke classic PSB atmospheres. Claptone’s Queen of Ice (PSB extended mix) and the Soft Cell / PSB Purple Zone (PSB extended mix) bring a moody, club-ready energy — haunting and hypnotic. The remixed Dreamland with Olly Alexander is a highlight: familiar yet refreshed, with glossy production that blends nostalgia and modern pop sensibilities.

The inclusion of more eclectic pieces like their Symphonic mix of Sam Taylor-Johnson’s I’m in Love With a German Film Star or the PSB maxi-mix of Wolfgang Tillmans’ Insanely Alive — underlines the duo’s willingness to explore beyond straightforward club edits. Even a reworked version of the iconic West End Girls (via the Sleaford Mods remix) shows they are still interested in rethinking their own legacy for modern ears.

That said, this collection isn’t flawless. Some listeners online have criticized certain tracks, especially the Tina Turner “Hot For You Baby” (PSB Hot mix)  as mismatched, claiming the vocals and beats don’t quite gel. > “the Tina one! Worst thing they’ve ever done!”  Others feel the compilation leans too safe with many tracks previously released, it reads more like a convenience for completists than a bold artistic statement.
