Vase* Hagakure 13) returns with “Liminal Phase, Pt.2,” the second and final chapter in a conceptual techno series that explores Rudolph Otto’s idea of Mysterium Fascinosum — the sense of awe, attraction, and transcendence found within collective ritual experiences. Drawing from decades immersed in underground dance culture, the track reflects an artist who understands both the raw energy of warehouse environments and the refined structures of classical composition.
Hailing from Harlow, England, Vase* Hagakure 13) carries a remarkable history shaped by East London’s free party soundsystem movement of the 1990s and early 2000s. During a period when Detroit minimal techno and Chicago house were considered unconventional choices, he championed these sounds while developing his craft as a classically trained musician with more than 30 years of experience. His latest work reconnects with the spirit of pioneers such as Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Terrence Dixon, Luke Slater, Regis, Surgeon, and Dave Clarke, while also reflecting influences from jazz innovators including Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
“Liminal Phase, Pt.2” creates the atmosphere of a vinyl record spinning inside a warehouse, enhanced by turntable brake effects, spin-backs, and carefully crafted analogue and digital processing. Recorded and mastered at Medway Studios in East London with engineer Jesse Skeens, the production benefits from an understanding of rave history and the Detroit techno tradition. Skeens’ experience helped shape the track’s authentic texture, capturing the feeling of a late-night set experienced through a physical record.
Beyond its club foundations, the release carries a deeper personal philosophy. Vase* Hagakure 13) uses techno as a way to encourage unity, connection, and positive energy during a divided era. With plans to revive the communal spirit of early underground nights through a new techno event series, this release represents both a tribute to the past and a forward-looking statement from an artist committed to preserving the transformative power of electronic music.
