There’s ambition, and then there’s Soliloquy, the sprawling double album from Melbourne outfit Reetoxa that doesn’t just aim high, it practically dares you to keep up. Listening to this record isn’t a passive experience; it’s a commitment. Designed to be heard in full, preferably through headphones, it pulls you into a deeply immersive journey that challenges your emotions and refuses to let go. This is not background music, it’s an encounter.

What makes the album so gripping is its origin story. First conceived in 1997, the project lay dormant for years before being reborn during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of refining earlier material, frontman Jason McKee went inward, reconstructing the album from scratch while living in a haze of caffeine, cigarettes, and sleepless nights. That intensity bleeds into every corner of the record, giving the songs a raw, lived-in authenticity that’s impossible to fake.

Soliloquy is as expansive as its narrative. Produced and mastered by Simon Moro, the album brings together an impressive lineup of musicians, including Kit Riley on bass and Peter Marin on drums, building a rich, layered sound. The addition of a European Budapest orchestra on several tracks adds cinematic weight, elevating the album beyond standard rock conventions into something far more ambitious and emotionally resonant.

Soliloquy feels like a life’s work finally realised. After decades of songwriting, McKee delivers a record that is both deeply personal and universally relatable. It lingers long after the final note fades, leaving you reflective, unsettled, and strangely fulfilled. Reetoxa hasn’t just released an album, they’ve created an experience that demands attention and rewards it in equal measure.
