The album Across the Ocean towards a Higher Firmament by Ståle Kleiberg is a major orchestral work influenced by themes of memory, migration, identity and human experience. The album begins with Lamento – Cissi Klein in memoriam, a tribute from 2001 to Cissi Klein, a young Jewish girl from Trondheim who was murdered during the Second World War. With a duration of 13 minutes and 25 seconds, the piece sets a deeply reflective tone and is included in Kleiberg’s trilogy concerning Nazi persecution. The next piece, The Town and its People, comes in at 10 minutes and 38 seconds, extending the album’s scope and marking a shift from the intimate to the epic. These opening pieces thus offer a significant introduction before the main symphonic section.

The narrative of the album is established by the three-movement Symphony No. 3, which was inspired by the massive wave of Norwegian emigration to North America in the 19th and 20th centuries and deals with the experiences of those who left Norway in order to find a new life on the other side of the ocean. The symphony progresses from a state of yearning via drama to a conclusion that has the character of a hymn, the movements being titled Espressivo e rubato. Andante. Tranquillo. Drammatico. Misterioso, and Maestoso. Quasi corale. It is the shift in the character of these sections that gives the symphony a clear sense of journey and purpose.

The album Across the Ocean towards a Higher Firmament consists of five substantial tracks and is therefore intended for careful listening rather than for rapid consumption. The fact that Kleiberg has worked with both the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and Szilvay ensures a sense of continuity for a project based on Norwegian history and identity. By combining the themes of remembrance, place, migration, and belonging, the album acquires a well-defined thematic focus, while its orchestral scale offers an extensive backdrop for these ideas. It is a highly impressive contemporary classical album with a unique historical viewpoint.
