“Elevate” kicks off with a very pertinent question about the slow erosion of your own sense of direction and the point at which life becomes just a series of habits rather than a series of choices. It’s the lead single from the forthcoming The Luminous Abyss and it’s all about the struggle between just existing on autopilot and the desire to actually have a sense of agency. The central theme is introduced through the imagery of corridors, cages and blindfolds, painting a picture of someone who is very much in a box. It’s not just a song about being unhappy, it’s a song about the resolve to break the mental boundaries that keep you in that box.
Modern metal, electronic architecture and a piano led melancholy form the wider musical canvas of the record, the cinematic darkness adding greatly to the sense of weight of the subject. It’s a very appropriate backdrop for a song about internal resistance and the process of changing your perception. There’s a very clear contrast between the normality of the everyday and the unease that comes with questioning it, which in turn allows the central theme to go well beyond just a personal experience and into a wider exploration of human behaviour.
Keep the mind up, the song is constantly telling you to do that. The whole idea of breaking the cage of the normal grind is there and it’s very much in the air. The imagery of being trapped in a box, of being unable to move, is used to illustrate just how easy it is to become routine. It doesn’t present enlightenment as some kind of easy out though. The very act of seeing past the usual explanations is likely to bring with it a whole host of uncomfortable questions and will in all probability unsettle the structures that you’ve previously found to be a source of comfort.

As an intro to The Luminous Abyss, “Elevate” is a very strong starting point for a piece that is all about awareness, resistance and awakening. Its real strength is in the distinction between just being and actually looking at the conditions that are in place that shape our thinking. It doesn’t offer you any comforting reassurance at all, it just gets you to question your situation and re-examine the boundaries that you’ve simply been living with. That’s a very potent message and one that is very much of the introspective, thought provoking variety.
