He uses DADGAD as a melodic tool, shaping a flowing fingerstyle arrangement around an opening chord sequence that first emerged during experimentation with the tuning.
The recording process reinforces the piece’s intimate character. Captured in Howard’s home loft with a single Rode NT4 microphone positioned approximately nine inches from the point where the guitar’s neck meets its body, “Highland Mist” embraces an uncomplicated, old-school recording philosophy. There is no sense of excessive production standing between the listener and the instrument. Instead, the guitar remains the focal point, allowing its natural character and Howard’s nuanced playing to carry the imagery.
Howard’s journey from classical guitar into folk, blues and rock gives the composition a broad artistic foundation. Influences ranging from Julian Bream and Martin Simpson to Dominic Miller, Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore inform his expansive artistic outlook, while his commitment to original instrumental storytelling remains distinctly his own. “Highland Mist” succeeds as a concise portrait of a landscape imagined through sound—quiet, spacious and mysterious, with every phrase contributing to its vivid sense of place.
