GENRE; Rock

LABEL; Run for Cover

RATING; 3/5

Warmer Than Gold marks a bold new chapter for GUV, the long‑running project of Ben Cook (formerly known as Young Guv and Young Governor). Released on January 30, 2026 via Run For Cover Records, the album finds Cook blending jangly guitar pop with Britpop, Madchester rhythms, dream‑pop textures and early shoegaze influences into a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

From the opening track “Let Your Hands Go”, the record sets a tone of radiant energy and motion, with kaleidoscopic guitars and pulsating breakbeats that wouldn’t be out of place on a ’90s UK music show.  The title track lives up to its name, bathing listeners in shimmering chords and warm, inviting grooves that evoke sunsets and festival fields.  Across its twelve songs — including “Blue Jade”, “Out of This Place” and “Never Should Have Said” (featuring Hatchie) — Cook stretches his musical vocabulary while maintaining a melodic sensibility that has defined his past work.

Lyrically, Warmer Than Gold swims through themes of travel, love, dislocation and cultural reflection, reflecting Cook’s life moving between Toronto and London.  The production, shaped with collaborators like James Matthew Seven, Darcy Baylis, Hatchie and Meg Mills, gives the album a widescreen feel — sometimes atmospheric and expansive, other times punchy and rhythm‑driven.

Critically, the album has been praised for its lush textures and mood‑setting qualities, though some reviews note that the hooks aren’t always as instantly memorable as in his past releases.  What Warmer Than Gold excels at is creating an immersive sonic journey — a soundtrack for city nights, open roads and reflective moments, confirming GUV’s evolution into a confident, genre‑fluid artist.
