There is something deeply human about Reetoxa’s “War Killer.” Beneath its loud guitars and punk-rock aggression lies a surprisingly vulnerable story about fear, hope, and the strange possibility of peace. Fronted by Melbourne artist Jason McKee, the single feels less like a protest song and more like a personal reckoning from someone shaped by military discipline and years of believing conflict was inevitable.
The inspiration behind the track is fascinating. During Melbourne’s brutal lockdown period, Jason witnessed the televised meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un and found himself emotionally shaken. Having spent ten years in the Royal Australian Navy, North Korea had always represented danger and uncertainty in his mind. Suddenly seeing diplomacy replace hostility clearly changed something within him, and “War Killer” captures that emotional confusion with remarkable honesty.

What stands out most is the authenticity of the performance. Recorded at The Avenue Studio with producer Simon Moro, the song reportedly came together during a spontaneous first take after a relaxed break between the band members. That looseness gives the track a living pulse. The guitars crash with urgency, while Jason delivers his vocals with a mixture of anger, exhaustion, and hope. It sounds like someone trying to make sense of a world that no longer follows familiar rules.
Reetoxa clearly wears its punk influences proudly, particularly echoes of Sham 69 and their call for unity through music. Yet “War Killer” never feels nostalgic. It feels current, risky, and emotionally exposed. In a time where division dominates headlines and conversations, the song’s simple desire for peace becomes surprisingly powerful. Whether listeners agree with its perspective or not, “War Killer” leaves a lasting impression because it comes from a place of genuine belief rather than manufactured outrage.
