Kings County tackle the more sinister aspects of the human condition on “The Dead of Night’ which is a very powerful rock song. It’s a very aggressive guitar driven track with some very strong melodic vocals and definitely has the feel of 90s hard rock mixed with the energy of today’s rock. It’s a very dark song in terms of the atmosphere it creates and it does so by focusing on the theme of inner demons, the struggle for identity and the battle between light and darkness rather than just relying on the sheer force of the music.
Driving guitars and big vocal lines give the track a real presence, a very forceful sound that’s very memorable. Rob Dexter’s vocal delivery is full of attitude and that really brings the dark subject matter of the song to life. There’s a real sense of intensity in the way the vocals and the guitars interact, a very aggressive delivery which at the same time is perfectly balanced with the melodic content. It’s a very purposeful song, which is absolutely in no doubt, without in any way sacrificing the hooks.
Beyond the surface aggression it’s a song about the internal battles people go through when the outward appearance no longer tells the whole story. It’s very much a song about inner demons and the struggle between good and evil which gives it a real psychological depth. Darkness is more than just something to be afraid of in this song, it’s a means of discovering who you really are. That in itself gives the song a message of resilience, a message that you have to go and face the truth rather than just live in it.
“The Dead of Night” is a very strong statement about facing up to your own demons and coming out the other side with a much clearer sense of who you are. Kings County deliver a very physical piece of guitar work, a very strong melody and a very definite rock ‘n’ roll attitude. It’s a track which has a real identity about it, one which goes well beyond the sheer power of the performance. It’s a track about the darkness and the struggle and yet it’s a track which ends up with you with a real sense of self.
