Daniel Higley’s “Dragon’s Blood” transforms personal adversity into an emotionally charged statement of resilience and renewal. Inspired by the turmoil surrounding his divorce and the dramatic events that accompanied that period, the track follows the difficult journey of finding strength after hardship. Rather than allowing pain to define the narrative, Higley turns his experience into a story of perseverance, self-discovery, and the determination to rise again. The result is a deeply personal piece that carries an uplifting message without losing sight of the struggles that inspired it.
A major part of the track’s emotional character comes through German singer Dämmerlie, an emerging artist Higley discovered through an unconventional advertisement on a Berlin light pole. Coming from a hip-hop and trap background, Dämmerlie initially felt uncertain about stepping into such a different creative direction, but her vulnerable and expressive performance becomes one of the release’s strongest elements. Her contribution is complemented by the stirring harmonies of a Nigerian choir, adding warmth, depth, and a sense of grandeur that reinforces the song’s themes of hope and recovery.
Recorded in Germany, “Dragon’s Blood” reflects Higley’s fascination with immersive, cinematic soundscapes and his admiration for influential artists including Radiohead, The Beatles, and Air. The project carries a distinctly international character, bringing together creative contributions from different backgrounds while maintaining Higley’s personal artistic identity. Mixing by Italian producer and engineer Mitia Wexler and mastering at the legendary Abbey Road Studios by Stefan Brown further enhance the polished character of the production, giving the track a refined and expansive presentation.
Higley’s creative philosophy is influenced by advice from Selene Vigil of 7 Year Bitch, who encouraged him to make his work as real, powerful, and intense as possible. That philosophy resonates strongly throughout “Dragon’s Blood,” where vulnerability is balanced with determination and hope. As a preview of his forthcoming full-length album The Pendulum, the track establishes an intriguing creative direction while standing firmly on its own as a heartfelt reflection on survival, transformation, and the courage required to start again.
