Darren Flynn’s The Pinebox EP is a five-track collection that brings together Americana, folk, country and Irish musical traditions in a distinctly personal setting. The project explores a varied range of songwriting styles, beginning with the acoustic, blues-tinged character of “I Ain’t Gonna Worry About It.” Its relaxed personality establishes the EP’s earthy character, while the title track “Pinebox” moves into considerably heavier territory. Flynn reimagines the U2 classic through his own Irish-American roots perspective, replacing the original’s jangling guitar character with banjo and harmonica while adding close-part harmonies to the chorus. His affection for the song is apparent, particularly in its enduring message of hope, perseverance and continuing to search despite life’s uncertainties. The interpretation feels less like a conventional cover and more like a personal connection to a song that has remained meaningful to him since childhood.
