The album titled “Tales of Les Dames Blanches” by Johanna Telander takes centuries’ worth of ghost folklore and turns it into an ambitious concept album that focuses on the women who lie behind the legends. It is based on various stories including La Dame Blanche de Puymartin from France, La Llorona from Latin America, the White Lady of Balete Drive from the Philippines, and Valkoinen Rouva from Finland; thus the album moves through different cultures while at the same time concentrating on the human stories hidden beneath the supernatural elements. The twelve main characters portrayed in it stand for a range of archetypes from maidens and mothers to witches and crones, thereby presenting a wide-ranging picture of womanhood influenced by history, folklore, fear, and fate.
The theatrical character of the album is enhanced by a cast made up entirely of women from Broadway and the recording industry, such as Militia Vox, Natalie Toro, Felicia Curry, Melody Munitz, Catrina Teruel, Jenny Lindsey, Dayna Grayber, Kristi Roosmaa, Mia Moravis, and Telander herself. Each of the performers takes on one of the twelve fateful phantoms, thus endowing women whose stories have usually been transmitted as frightening ones with individual personalities. The phantoms carry fragments of a woman’s soul towards a mysterious shore, aiming for salvation and entry into the beyond by means of a ferryman’s boat.
Telander’s music shifts smoothly between classical, folk and ethereal pop-jazz styles, providing a background that matches the album’s themes of ancient forests, weather-beaten castles and storm-hit skerries. She was responsible for writing, arranging and orchestrating the music, while Jay Alton from Alton Sound carried out the mixing and mastering. The blend of dramatic storytelling with these diverse musical textures gives the project a clear concept-album character, enabling the twelve stories to act as part of a single overall journey rather than as separate stories.
A remarkable feature of the album is the way it puts the women at the heart of their own narratives. Rather than showing the ‘Ladies in White’ from the point of view of those who were afraid of them or who disapproved of them, ‘Tales of Les Dames Blanches’ looks into the real human experiences that underlie the legends and the tragic endings which shaped them. By linking these individuals together across various periods and continents, Telander encourages listeners to look again at well-known ghost stories and at the women’s histories that have been left unexamined. The outcome is a dramatic, folklore-based piece with a definite narrative aim and an unusually broad scope.
