The idea is strongly linked with the feeling of a mind which refuses to slow down; train tracks, clowns, a jack-in-the-box, and mechanical rhythms all serve as clear images of thoughts picking up speed and going out of control. On its own as a single, ‘Jack in the Box’ provides a convincing glimpse into this world: it is restless yet melodic, dark yet playful, and experimental without at the same time becoming inaccessible. It represents an interesting phase in MONNE’s creative development.
