Memories and Empty Bottles is an example of a cooperative approach to country music, as John Smyths has put together a collection based on personal experiences and involving writers and musicians who work in different places. The end product is an album whose identity goes beyond that of a single recording location and includes creative inputs from the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany.

‘Those Bones of Mine’ is one of the tracks that had been previously acknowledged and is therefore connected with the album in that regard. By including it, the album achieves a sense of continuity with Smyths’ earlier work, and the more extensive choice of songs enables listeners to become familiar with various parts of his musical output. Instead of just putting together a number of separate tracks, the album gathers songs which have their own backstories under a single title.

A more personal viewpoint can be seen in “My Little Girl”, a song that is on the family-oriented side of the project. On the other hand, “Now I’m Wiser” brings in the theme of experience and the realization that comes with time. The songs provide various ways of accessing the collection, showing the diversity of the subjects covered without forgetting the personal link that runs throughout the album.

Rita Weyls, Hilde Vos, and John P. Taylor all made contributions to the songwriting of the album, and Niles Krieger, the fiddle player, is featured on the tracks that include the fiddle. Another element of collaboration is provided by the duet with Victoria Eman. The recording took place in studios in Nashville, in the United Kingdom, and in the Netherlands, and the album was then mastered in Germany. The fact that the project involved such an international approach gives Memories and Empty Bottles a special production background, as it brings together a number of creative contributors in an album based on personal experiences and influenced by country music.
