Lady Nade’s album Identity is an inspiring and highly personal work that centres on self-discovery, self-acceptance, a feeling of belonging and the courage needed to be seen for who you truly are. Based on folk and Americana, the record includes elements of soul, pop, soft rock, jazz and blues, thus producing a diverse sound which mirrors the wide range of emotions dealt with in the songs. Instead of treating identity as something simple or unchanging, Identity accepts vulnerability, encourages reflection, holds onto hope and shows resilience, giving the album a warm human touch and a sense of emotional openness.

The most notable songs on the album present various viewpoints on these themes; “Sober” gives the song, which is based on Lady Nade’s experience of going sober, a happy, romantic retro soul-pop flavour, whereas “One Of Us” addresses the issue of toxic generational patterns and the decision to practise self-love in an empowering folk and indie rock style. “Rainbow” then moves into a calm and reassuring space music style, using elements of folk and soul to look at the possibility of having opposing emotions at the same time and to stress the need for compassion towards oneself. Each of the songs contributes a further dimension to the album’s examination of personal truth.

“Bloom” serves as a suitable concluding track, being a bright acoustic folk-pop song concerning growth and loss. Its placement at the end of the album underlines the journey of the record from reflection and vulnerability to acceptance and renewal. Throughout the songs, Identity keeps a clear link between its musical styles and the experiences being examined, which makes the transitions from folk to soul, through Americana, pop, soft rock, jazz and blues seem intentional rather than arbitrary.

The reason why Identity is so strong lies in the wide range of topics it covers. The album allows room for complex emotions, personal transformation and the process of learning to accept all aspects of oneself. By combining folk and roots music with elements of soul, pop, soft rock, jazz and blues it achieves a welcoming variety, and tracks like ‘Sober’, ‘One Of Us’, ‘Rainbow’ and ‘Bloom’ offer memorable ways of accessing its themes. Identity is an album concerned with standing by your own truth, achieving acceptance through vulnerability and seeing the beauty in being human.
