“Woman’s Burden” has the impact of a personal history and is structured around the themes of contrast, challenge, confinement, and release. It was first written as a poem in 2011 and was afterwards turned into a song; the piece follows a journey from what VelumVelvet refers to as years of “hush” to the freedom experienced in 2020. This background provides the song with a definite emotional focus, the work being seen as a reflection of where its creative world started and where it eventually gained the courage to emerge.
The composition is deliberately focused on the piano, the strings, and the vocal part, each contributing to the song’s sense of tension and its subsequent release. There is a purposeful contrast between the piano and the vocal element, illustrating the difficulty of feeling confined while at the same time hoping to reach sunlight and freedom. Instead of having a busy production, “Woman’s Burden” stays concentrated on this main emotional tension, letting the interaction between the piano, the strings, and the vocal take over the course of the piece.
The fact that the song was recorded at home also gives it an intimate feel. The vocals were recorded in a small, quiet room, whereas the production was carried out by people who worked remotely from South America and Spain. The distance between the people involved in the project is an interesting aspect of the way the recording was done, but the final song stays focused on the personal story which is at its heart. One gets the impression that the purpose of the recording is to convey the experience as honestly as possible rather than to offer an excessively polished version of it.

“Woman’s Burden” marks a important stage in VelumVelvet’s journey since it turns an old poem and a difficult time into a declaration of liberation. The fact that it is included in the “Room of Release” assigns the song a special function within the overall concept of the House of Emotional Rooms, and at the same time its themes of feeling trapped, discovering sunlight, and having the courage to speak give it a certain emotional clarity. The outcome is a highly personal single centred on vulnerability, contrast, and the freedom to finally express what had stayed silent for years.
