Very few concept albums manage to combine such a definite cultural context with reflections on the course of modern society, and the “Adorati Spiriti” by Massimo Donelli and Paolo Rossi achieves this by telling the story of Native Americans from the Great Lakes area in order to look at the deep changes affecting social and cultural life; the two main characters, Chayton and Tokala, give these questions a human aspect.
Chayton is an old Cheyenne man who is nearing the end of his life, whereas Tokala stands for a younger generation which has already been absorbed into a world very different from the past. This difference between them leads to a natural contrast, yet the album does not turn this contrast into a straightforward debate between the two generations. When describing Chayton’s viewpoint, openness, sensitivity and intelligence are highlighted as he talks about a wide-ranging system that includes religion, culture, society, politics and values.
The idea is particularly relevant when it comes to dealing with change; modernity is not portrayed as something that Tokala has to get rid of and the past is not regarded as something that should just vanish. Rather, the story examines whether the traditional cultural and social references can still be meaningful even as people keep adjusting to new situations. Because of this, the album has a broader significance than its particular narrative background might at first appear to have.
Donelli and Rossi develop this idea by means of their musical collaboration, which is based especially on prog, jazz fusion and world music; Donelli is responsible for composing the music, which is then altered using artificial intelligence, while Rossi writes the lyrics and also acts as co-producer. Thus, the pair create an album entitled “Adorati Spiriti” with a clear conceptual character, the subject of which is the meeting point between cultural identity and a rapidly changing society.
