Restlessness takes on a very eerie dimension in “Drums Are Beating My Steps’ where insomnia becomes an experience of perpetual movement and mental agitation. It’s the space between being utterly exhausted and being awake that ‘Eternal Mourning’ is so effectively exploring. There’s an entity that seems to be telling you where to go and what to do at every step, which is absolutely terrifying in its sense of helplessness. That’s the whole point of the song really.

Cinematic folk textures and a very layered sound create a very dark, atmospheric backdrop which is perfectly suited to the subject matter. It’s firmly in the dark folk/alternative space and it’s a very inward song, with a strong sense of unease. The atmosphere is quite dark and the song is very much about the internal state of the person. It doesn’t just deal with the problem of insomnia in the sense of trying to get to sleep, it’s about insomnia as a condition in which stillness is simply impossible.

Under that atmosphere there’s a constant struggle between surrender and self-determination. The sheer feeling of being carried along without any choice as to where you’re going is incredibly compelling and speaks to just how draining it can be to lose control of your own thoughts and actions. The intimate nature of the narrative gives it a very personal quality and the filmic treatment adds to the emotional impact. It’s a journey that’s very much caught between two poles: the desire to simply let the momentum carry you on and the desire to find the strength to assert your own will.

Released independently on 23rd October 2026, “Drums Are Beating My Steps” is a considered piece of work which looks at insomnia in a very dark and atmospheric way. It’s very much about the emotional state of being sleepless and that gives it a real raison d’etre. The blend of the very intimate and the cinematic folk is a good one and really gives the track its identity. Eternal Mourning take the experience of being sleepless and the sense of movement without control and turn it into a potent meditation on fatigue, inner turmoil and the sheer difficulty of achieving freedom.
