The second album by Iberico, entitled “Entroterra”, consists of twelve tracks which are influenced by memory, origin, distance, and the fragile tales that individuals carry with them throughout their lives. Since the songs are sung in Italian, the album lies somewhere between the style of contemporary singer-songwriters and that of indie-pop, employing narrative storytelling to examine the lasting impressions that places, relationships, and time leave behind. Instead of offering a single continuous personal narrative, Iberico alternates between personal experiences, actual stories from everyday life, and fictional characters, thus giving the record a diverse point of view while at the same time keeping a well-defined thematic focus.

The sense of place is a key feature of “Entroterra”, since childhood, family memories, migration, relationships, cities and changing landscapes all play an important role in the way the story is told. Both Calabria and Milan serve as two frequent points of reference and thus establish a natural link between the place someone comes from and the places where their life eventually leads them. By means of particular images, people and situations, Iberico enables broader reflections on belonging and identity to come out of individual stories rather than making direct assertions.

The album places a strong emphasis on vulnerability, displacement, resilience, and the social divisions which can affect everyday lives. By carefully observing people and the situations they find themselves in, Iberico transforms small aspects of human experience into thoughts about memory, loss, time, and change. The fact that the album incorporates the writer’s own experiences alongside stories based on real people and fictional characters ensures that it doesn’t come across as merely being an account of his own life. All these different viewpoints together help to create a broader picture of individuals attempting to come to terms with what stays behind after familiar places, relationships, and circumstances have changed.m

After “Non fare rumore”, the album “Entroterra” marks a more extensive narrative phase in Iberico’s songwriting. The twelve tracks on it form a modern Italian singer-songwriter record that is based on the Italian cantautorato tradition yet includes indie-pop features and arrangements which allow the stories and the characters to come forward. The album treats storytelling as a means of linking personal experience with broader issues concerning geography, belonging, and human vulnerability. “Entroterra” is a thoughtful record centred on the traces left behind by people, places, and time.
