Mitski Delivers a Poignant Cover of Pete Townshend’s “Let My Love Open the Door” for New Film Soundtrack

Indie icon Mitski has offered a fresh take on Pete Townshend’s 1980 solo hit “Let My Love Open the Door,” contributing the cover to the soundtrack for the upcoming film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. Released by Milan Records, the soundtrack blends a string of original compositions and covers—and Mitski’s rendition stands out for its emotional subtlety and sonic intimacy.

Originally written and performed by Townshend as part of his Empty Glass solo work, “Let My Love Open the Door” has long been remembered as a warm, buoyant anthem. Mitski’s version reinterprets the classic with a gentler arrangement that plays to her strengths: her voice floats over a more restrained instrumentation, allowing the lyrics’ core message—love, openness, vulnerability—to breathe in a new way. Rather than trying to replicate Townshend’s energetic pop rock flair, Mitski leans into reflection, giving listeners room to consider the song’s emotional resonance in a modern context.

The A Big Bold Beautiful Journey soundtrack itself is notable for bringing together composer Joe Hisaishi—making his Hollywood film-scoring debut—and Icelandic singer Laufey, whose contributions include both covers and originals. Mitski’s version adds depth to a collection that mixes genres, eras, and moods.

Fans of Mitski will likely appreciate how her voice and artistry shape a familiar song into something introspective; those discovering her through the film may find this cover an entry point into both her catalog and the way artists can re-examine older material with respect and freshness. Mitski’s “Let My Love Open the Door” doesn’t rewrite the source—it re-interprets it, and in doing so, it opens listeners’ ears to what love can sound like when viewed through her lens.
